Notes
Maybe the greatest musical ever written, at least
for men, this revival with Nathan Lane had the greatest advance
ticket sales in the history of Broadway, and went on to be a
big hit.
A documentary was made called "Guys and Dolls
- Off The Record," that can often be seen on public television
around fundraising time - it shows our cast recording the album,
live, with the orchestra in one of New York City's legendary
recording studios - now an office complex.
I had the good fortune to play Sky Masterson,
a high-rolling gambler who ends up abandoning his morally dubious
ways to join the love of his life, Sarah Brown, played by Josie
de Guzman, in the Salvation Army. It's a lot better than I make
it sound.
Reviews
John Simon, NEW YORK, April,
1992
".....there are things here even finer than in the
fabled original production. Take the Sky Masterson of Peter
Gallagher, who acts, sings, and looks better than the formidable
Robert Alda did. Gallagher creates a quieter, more introverted
and complex Sky. He is not just a dashing leading man; there
are things going on under his assurance....."
Frank Rich, The New York
Times, April, 1992
".....Peter Gallagher, who made an impression in one
Broadway musical (the short-lived "A Doll's Life) before
moving on to heavier dramatic duties, is a heaven-sent Sky Masterson
with brooding good looks, a voice that always remains both in
mellow key and gritty character, and a dark, commanding presence
that is up to the high theatrical stakes of "Luck Be A
Lady". Mr. Gallagher also has a shy smile that slowly breaks
through his tough facade....."
Clive Barnes, The New York Post, April, 1992
".....the unexpectedly strong-voiced Peter Gallagher
makes the most charismatic Sky Masterson you could encounter....."
William A. Henry III, TIME, April, 1992
".....the fulcrum of the story is Peter Gallagher's blend
of immense charm with an appropriately edgy and dangerous aura
as the big-time gambler Sky Masterson....."
